Only Twice 6 Indian Batsmen Got Ducks In An Innings: Virat Kohli, Jadeja In This Embarrassing Record

Senior India players Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja have been part of both of India’s embarrassing records in which the team recorded six ducks in a Test innings.

The Day 1 in the IND vs SA 2nd Test in Cape Town has been a talking point, more so for the lethal, spicy, and incredibly challenging surface for the batters.

23 wickets fell on Wednesday at Newlands and the game is likely to conclude on Day 2 itself. Yes, Newlands has been a tough ground for the batters on Day 1 over the past two decades, but the kind of surface prepared by the new pitch curator for this Test was shocking; it is very likely to get a ‘Below average’ or ‘Poor’ rating from the match referee.

South Africa batted first, after Dean Elgar won the toss in his farewell Test. It turned into a horrific one for Elgar as South Africa got bowled out for only 55 runs courtesy of Mohammed Siraj’s six-fer. Then India looked in a decent position at 153/4, with a lead of 98 runs. But in a space of 11 balls, India had an astonishing collapse, losing their last 6 wickets for 0 runs! Yes, ZERO runs.

The three Protea pacers Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and Nandre Burger shared three wickets each while Siraj was run out. India went from 153/4 to, well, 153 all-out in a space of 11 balls, creating some embarrassing and unwanted records on their way.

Six wickets for 0 runs is the worst collapse – most wickets fell in a row without adding a single run – in Test history. India’s innings included six batters getting out for a duck – Jaiswal, Iyer, Bumrah, Siraj, Jadeja, and Prasidh. This collapse also included the wickets of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul. Rahul’s wicket started the collapse.

This is the 8th time in men’s Test cricket that an Test innings included six batsmen getting out for a duck. Interestingly, this is the second time this has happened for the Indian men’s team and both Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja were part of the previous instance – against England in 2014 in Manchester.

In that Manchester Test, India was bundled out for 152, which included six ducks from Indian batters, including Virat Kohli and Jadeja, both dismissed by James Anderson.
