England journalist Piers Morgan has resumed his Twitter beef with legendary Australian pacer Merv Hughes following England’s tight 3-wicket win over Pat Cummins’ side at Headingley.
After losses in the first two Tests of the Ashes 2023, England made a comeback in the series with a win in another thrilling match, in Leeds. England have kept the Ashes series alive with this win, the series now stands 2-1 with two Tests to go. Ben Stokes’ side also opened their account on the WTC 2023/25 cycle points table with this exciting finish at Headingley.
Piers Morgan and Merv Hughes had had a tussle on Twitter that got a bit ugly where both mocked each other following the Lord’s Test where Jonny Bairstow’s run-out by Alex Carey sparked widespread debate about the Spirit Of Cricket vs Laws of the game.
Ahead of the Headingley finish, Piers Morgan had called Merv Hughes a “bottle-job” and asked him “grow a pair as big as your ‘tash'”.
Piers Morgan takes a dig at Merv Hughes
After England’s win at Headingley, Piers Morgan tried to troll Merv Hughes again and tagged him in his tweet.
“Hi mate @MervHughes332 – need a hug?” Piers tweeted.
Though Hughes hasn’t responded to this tweet yet from the journalist, fans slammed Piers as this tweet was derogatory to the legendary pacer and also didn’t attract much attention from fans.

Well, in fairness to Piers, I wouldn't have resisted the urge to sledge, either. Fair play, mate. Good win. But you're still down 1-2. On to Old Trafford. #Ashes

Headingley match summary:
On Day 1, Australia looked in command, after being inserted in by Ben Stokes, when they were 240/4 with Mitchell Marsh hammering a century, playing in his first Test since the 2019 Ashes. However, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes ran through the Aussie lower-middle-order and tail to bowl them out for 263.
Ben Stokes’ heroics then chiseled down Australia’s lead to 26. Australia couldn’t really get going in their second innings, and it was only because of Head’s late assault that they set up a target of 251 for England, which the hosts got with 3 wickets hand, courtesy of a half-century from Harry Brook and good knocks from Crawley, Woakes and Wood in the end.
Mark Wood was named the Player of the Match. The fiery fast bowler took 7 wickets in the match and also made significant contributions with the bat, scoring 24 (8) and 16*(8).
When is the 4th Ashes Test?
The 4th Test of the Ashes 2023 will be played from July 19 at Old Trafford, Manchester.
