Former Indian captain and legendary batsman Rahul Dravid turned down an honorary doctorate degree offered to him by the Bangalore University, saying he would instead like to earn the degree through academic research in the field of sports.

Rahul Dravid, who is regarded as one of the most technically correct batsmen in cricket history, was born and brought up in Bangalore and also played Ranji Trophy for his state team. Bangalore University wanted the honour Dravid during its 52nd Annual Convocation Ceremony on January 27.

Dravid has always tried his best to stay away from limelight. Even during his playing days, Dravid was always far away from any sort of controversies and focused only on his game. After his retirement from international cricket, Dravid didn’t take up fancy jobs likes cricket commentary and choose to mentor young Indian players. He is now the coach of the India ‘A’ and U-19 teams.

Bangalore University stated in a press release on Thursday that Rahul Dravid had ‘in all humility declined to accept the Hon. Degree’.

“He has conveyed that he would try to earn a Doctorate Degree by accomplishing some form of academic research in the field of sport rather than receiving an Honorary Degree,” it stated.
