The Indian women’s cricket team defeated England in the third ODI match to complete the 3-0 series sweep. Even with England cricket nine wickets down, it seemed Charlie Dean will almost take the hosts to the brink of victory, however, bowler Deepti Sharma crushed all their hopes as she handed England a bitter defeat. The spinner controversially ‘Mankaded’ a set Charlie Dean for the hosts’ 10th wicket to seal the match.
The controversial wicket gave the Indian side a 16-run win over the hosts as England was bundled out for 153 runs in 43.3 overs while chasing a modest total of 170. The incident took place at a key moment of the match, which was set up for Jhulan Goswami’s grand finale by the retiring pacer herself with a wicket and a maiden in her last international over.
However, with England needing 17 runs, Charlie Dean made a fighting comeback for England but Deepti Sharma’s brilliance ended her stay by ‘Mankaded’ the batter while bowling the fourth delivery of the over. The on-field umpire signaled it a dead ball but after a discussion with the Indian captain, Harmanpreet Kaur made it clear that the Indians are staying with their appeal.
The whole incident divided opinions as the internet had a collective meltdown, with a plethora of reactions coming in, some favoring the bowler and some against her. Soon, Indian bowler Ravichandran Ashwin started trending on social media as fans as it made everyone nostalgic about IPL 2019 controversy involving Ravi Ashwin. For the unversed, during IPL 2019, Ashwin had run out England’s Jos Buttler, who was playing for Rajasthan Royals, for backing up too far. Ashwin was then the skipper of Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab).
Coming back to Ashwin’s Tweet over Deepti Sharma’s antics at Lord’s, he lauded Deepti Sharma and called her a ‘bowling hero’. He said:
“Why the hell are you trending Ashwin? Tonight is about another bowling hero @Deepti_Sharma06 🤩👏”
