Former Indian head coach and legendary cricketer Ravi Shastri has claimed that the Indian cricket team is due for an ICC trophy and has even urged the fans to remain patient with the team as he feels that titles would start to come in.
The Indian cricket team will be playing two major ICC events this year. They have managed to seal a spot for themselves in the upcoming World Test Championship final for the second consecutive time and will be taking on Australia at the Oval in June. After the WTC Final 2023, the attention will shift to the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, where the BCCI will host the tournament.
Notably, it was in 2013 when India last won an ICC event, when they lifted the Champions Trophy in England under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
At the subsequent two ODI World Cups over the course of the next ten years, India made the semifinals (2015 and 2019). They had advanced to the T20 World Cup final in 2014, made two semifinal appearances in 2016 and 2022, and were eliminated in the group stage in 2021. They had lost in the championship match of both the initial WTC competition and the Champions Trophy.
Ravi Shastri On India’s Chances Of Winning An ICC Trophy
Meanwhile, speaking to SportsYaari, Ravi Shastri explained that team India has been the most consistent team in the ICC events and that they are long due for an ICC trophy. He also urged the critics and fans to be patient. Shastri feels that once India starts winning, it will rain trophies.
Further, he explained his point by giving the example of Sachin Tendulkar, he said that the legendary batter played six World Cup tournaments in his illustrious career before winning his first one. He also gave the example of football great Messi explaining that once he broke the shackles he won the Copa America and the FIFA World Cup. He said:
“I think India are due. They have been consistent – they reached finals, semi-finals on a regular basis. Look at Sachin Tendulkar. He had to play six World Cups to win one ICC trophy. 6 World Cups means 24 years. And on his last World Cup, he won. Look at Lionel Messi. Classic example that is. I mean how long he has been playing. And when he started winning, he won the Copa America, and the the World Cup and scored in the final as well. So you have to wait. It will rain,”
