IND vs SA: “When I Was Coach…” – Ravi Shastri Isn’t Happy With Rohit’s Captaincy In 1st Test

Ravi Shastri Isn’t Happy With Rohit’s Captaincy In 1st Test: Dean Elgar surprised the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team with an unexpected performance, securing his 14th Test century on Day 2 of the initial Test match between India and South Africa.

In Centurion, the Indian cricket team faced batting challenges, managing only 245 runs in their first innings. At a certain juncture, even reaching this total seemed unlikely. However, KL Rahul’s comeback century played a crucial role in rescuing the team from a precarious situation.

To stay in contention for victory in the ongoing match, the Indian team must stage a robust comeback from their current situation. Nevertheless, former Indian cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri expressed dissatisfaction with Rohit Sharma’s defensive captaincy on the second day of the Centurion Test.

According to Ravi Shastri, the optimal strategy involves deploying the two best bowlers of the time at the forefront, especially at the beginning of each session. Contrary to this approach, it was Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna who initiated the proceedings for India after the Lunch break, a decision that didn’t align with Shastri’s preferred tactic.

Consequently, the South African team appeared unfazed, and opener Dean Elgar played a pivotal role in steering his team clear of early troubles. Prasidh Krishna, operating at one end, conceded close to six runs per over, while Shardul Thakur seemed out of form, leading to their removal from the bowling attack.

During commentary on Star Sports, Shastri said:

“On any pecking order, these two (Shardul and Prasidh) would have been the last to start the proceedings (after lunch). That’s something that we’ve had a discussion multiple times when I was the coach. And more often than not we decided to go with the best two bowlers at the start of the session.”

The second day of the 1st Test match between India and South Africa became memorable as KL Rahul marked his return to Test cricket with a century. Completing his ton with a six off Gerald Coetzee, Rahul’s innings featured an impressive display of 14 fours and four sixes.

Facing exclusion from the Indian Test side earlier in the year due to poor form, Rahul’s comeback has been exceptional, consistently scoring runs in the past few months. After a hiatus of 3 to 4 months due to an injury in IPL 2023, Rahul made a stellar return during the 2023 Asia Cup, where he notched up a century against Pakistan. His standout performances continued into the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he showcased remarkable wicketkeeping skills and played a match-winning innings in India’s first match against Australia.
