Indian star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has once again hit back at the critics of the game who feel that Mankad or running out a player on the non-striker’s end must be avoided at all costs. Ashwin’s comments came after Pakistan pacer Zaib-un-Nisa ran a Rwanda batter out a non-striker’s end in the ongoing inaugural U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup. The incident once again started a full-fledged debate on ‘is it the right way to get a wicket’ yet again.

The debate was started by former Australia cricketer Mark Waugh and the likes of Stuart Broad joined him. Cricketers who are against this practice said that this form of dismissal doesn’t require any skill to get a wicket. Mark Waugh wrote: “The worst thing is it seems that teams are using it as a deliberate planned way to get a wicket.”

I get that it’s legal. I get that it’s part of the rules. But a tiny piece of my heart breaks seeing this happen at U19s level. I guess this is where the game is going… pic.twitter.com/3MzLyimii9

Ravi Ashwin was quick to join the debate and come up with a brilliant reply to it. Ashwin shared a tweet of a user, who slammed all the critics by posting a wicket England got through the batter hitting the bat of the non-striker and it ballooning up in the air to get caught against New Zealand.

It has to be noted that Ashwin was the first one who brought Mankad into the limelight when he ran out Jos Buttler during the IPL 2019. Now, the Under-19 World Cup incident has again triggered a social media war on the controversial mode of dismissal.

Sharing the video, Ravichandran Ashwin came up with a cheeky reply to the tweet, taking a dig at those criticizing the non-striker run-out infamously called Mankad. With his tweet, by calling the bowlers “oppressed”, Ashwin has reiterated the point that rules have always favored the batters. He wrote: “Oppressed community called “bowlers” please wake up🙏”

Earlier, former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad also schooled Waugh, who found a new angle to criticize the dismissal. He wrote: “Yes right, Bowlers planning to get a player out by legal means is the worst thing. Batsman wanting to take unfair advantage by not staying back in the crease is the best thing,”
