IPL 2022: Former RCB coach Daniel Vettori believes that Virat Kohli will never again captain the Royal Challengers Bangalore having stepped down from the position at the end of last season. Virat Kohli relinquished his India T20I captaincy and the RCB captaincy last year.

Virat Kohli led the franchise for 9 seasons but couldn’t deliver a single title. The best RCB did under Kohli was reach the 2016 final, but lost at home to David Warner’s Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Now, with the IPL 2022 mega-auction completed, RCB have a decision to make: to appoint a new captain. There are three contenders for the job: Glenn Maxwell, who was retained, Faf du Plessis and Dinesh Karthik, both of whom were bought in the auction.

While the final decision of the franchise is soon to be announced, Daniel Vettori explained that once Virat Kohli had decided to move on from captainship, he won’t take the position ever again.

Virat Kohli is never captain RCB again: Daniel Vettori

“No [Virat Kohli will not be the RCB captain again]. I think it is as simple as that. I don’t think that ever works, let alone in franchise cricket or international cricket. Once the captain is moved on, the right thing is for him to move on,” said Vettori as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Glenn Maxwell won’t be available for the few initial games due to his wedding – for which he will also be missing the white-ball series in Pakistan – and Vettori believes that du Plessis is the frontrunner to lead RCB this season.

“I think they will look at Kohli, Maxwell, and Du Plessis as the leadership group and even Dinesh Karthik. I think Faf will step in for Maxwell. But if they win the first three games, maybe they will continue on with him,” the former Kiwi skipper added.

The IPL 2022 will kick off on March 26 with the encounter between last year’s finalists, CSK and KKR, at the Wankhede stadium. RCB’s first game will be against Punjab on March 27.
