Led by Smriti Mandhana and inspired by sensational performances from the spin trio, the RCB women’s team won the WPL 2024 title by defeating Meg Lanning’s Delhi Capitals women’s team in the final on Sunday in Delhi.
The wait is over for RCB fans. And while the men’s team – which has had captains like Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis, and great T20 players like Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers – couldn’t win a single title in 16 editions of the IPL, it took only the second season for Mandhana’s women’s team to clinch the WPL trophy.
The famous saying among RCB fans of “Ee Sala Cup Namde (“This time the Cup is Ours”) ” has finally come true and it has come true courtesy of the women’s team as they won the WPL 2024 final by 8 wickets through a solid and dominating show from the spinners.
Lanning won the toss and elected to bat first. Shafali Verma went all guns blazing by smashing 44 runs in 27 balls in an opening partnership of 64 runs in 7 overs. However, it all turned around in one over from Australian left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux, who took three wickets in one over to wrest the momentum in RCB’s favour.
From thereon, RCB put a strong chokehold over the run rate with regular wickets, also aided by poor shot-making from the Delhi batters. Leg-spinner Asha Sobhana took two wickets while off-spinner Shreyanka Patil grabbed a four-wicket haul, chiselling through the tailenders.
In the chase of 114, RCB were always there and thereabouts and kept the required run rate close to six runs per over. It never went out of hand and eventually, they gunned down the target with 3 balls to spare and 8 wickets in hand.
This led to a spate of memes, and trolling of the RCB men’s team after the RCB women’s team won the WPL 2024 trophy:
