Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly believes India made the right decision in appointing Rohit as captain for the upcoming 2024 World Cup.

Rohit Sharma, after a year-long hiatus, led India to a 3-0 series victory against Afghanistan in T20Is. Ganguly, in an interview with Mid-Day, expressed his belief that Rohit was the perfect choice for the T20 World Cup captaincy.
Ganguly highlighted how Rohit Sharma’s leadership led India to the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 by winning 10 consecutive matches. Ganguly said.
“Rohit Sharma is the right choice as India captain for the T20 World Cup. The way he led the Indian team and won 10 matches in the 50-over World Cup is still fresh in our memory. So, Rohit was the best choice,”
For the unversed, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah made the announcement that Rohit Sharma would lead the Indian team at the T20 World Cup 2024. Just before the third Test against England, Shah expressed confidence that India would emerge victorious in West Indies with Rohit at the helm.
“We may have lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. But we won hearts there by winning 10 matches in a row. I am confident that India will lift the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy at Barbados,” Jay Shah said.
Notably, Rohit Sharma hadn’t played a T20I match since India’s loss in the T20 World Cup 2022 semifinals. But he made a stunning comeback against Afghanistan, scoring a century in the final match after two initial ducks.

In Rohit’s absence, Hardik Pandya captained the Indian team. He also took over as captain of the Mumbai Indians for IPL 2024. This led to speculation that he might lead India in the T20 World Cup. However, Hardik hasn’t played since getting injured during the ODI World Cup 2023.
