Rohit Sharma Finally Answers About Tilak Varma’s Chances For World Cup 2023

Rohit Sharma led India have tried quite a few batsmen at the number 4 position in the past couple of years. Shreyas Iyer seemed to have cemented his position in that slot, but his injury flared up the debate once again.

With the Asia Cup just three weeks away and the World Cup 2023 less than a couple of months away, Team India are not yet certain about their plans.

One batsman which many fans are championing is Tilak Varma, even though the 20-year-old has not even played a single ODI and has featured in only 3 T20Is so far in his career. Fans and experts have been left so impressed with Tilak Varma’s temperament, his quality, his class, and composure in his 3 T20I outings and his couple of seasons with the Mumbai Indians that they strongly feel Varma should be given a chance in the Asia Cup, and if he does well, then in the World Cup as well.

The left-hander has exceptional List-A numbers: in 25 List-A games, Varma averages 56 with a strike rate of 101 with 5 centuries and 5 fifties.

Rohit Sharma doesn’t shut doors on Tilak Varma for World Cup 2023

Varma could be India’s wild-card entry in the World Cup 2023, as Jofra Archer was for England just ahead of the 2019 World Cup.

India captain Rohit Sharma, who is currently in the USA on a break, was asked about the chances of Tilak to make into the World Cup squad. Rohit hailed Varma’s incredible talent and his game nous. But Rohit neither closed the door on his chances nor did contend for him strongly.

“He looks very promising. I have seen him for two years now, he has got the hunger, and that is the most important thing,” Rohit said in an interview with PTI.

“In him I can see, for the age that he is of, he is quite mature. He knows his batting so well. When I speak with him I understand that the boy knows his batting – where he has to hit, what he has to do in that period.

“That is all that I will say about him, I do not know about the World Cup and all, but definitely the guy is talented and he showed it in these few games that he has played for India,” he added.

If the selectors do pick up Tilak Varma for the Asia Cup, it could make for something really exciting for the fans.
