Rohit Sharma Reveals The Reason Behind His Grass Eating Celebration: Team India won the T20 World Cup 2024 undefeated and became the first’s side in history to win the tournament without losing any game. The fans and the players were eagerly waiting for an ICC trophy win for 11 years. They won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 under MS Dhoni. Since then, they have faltered in the semi final or the final of the tournament.
Just seven months ago, India suffered a heartbreaking loss in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 against Australia in Ahmedabad after winning all the 10 games till the final dominantly. The players and fans were in tears. It was especially the captain Rohit Sharma, who was the most heartbroken. He wanted to win the ODI World Cup desperately. In that tournament, he led from the front and batted selflessly, taking India to fast starts and relieving the pressure on the middle order. So, the defeat in the final came as a huge setback to the Hitman.
However, Rohit Sharma led his team with renewed hopes in the T20 World Cup 2024 in the Carribean and USA. They were determined to win the title at any cost. Sharma again led from the front and also gave India fast starts while opening the innings. He was at his destructive best against Australia in the Super 8 and England in the semi final.
After the win in the final, he was a relived man. He was carrying the burden of World Cup loss in his home ground. The hitman was in tears after his side managed to win clinch the T20 World Cup trophy. After the final, both him and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from T20I’s, marking an end of an era.
In an interview with BCCI tv, Rohit Sharma talked about the feeling after winning the World Cup.
“Yeah, the feeling is actually surreal. It still hasn’t sunk in totally. It’s been a great moment, right from when the game got over until now. It feels like a dream. We still feel that it hasn’t happened; although it has happened, it feels like it hasn’t happened. That’s the emotion; that’s the feeling that you have,” Rohit said.
“We’ve dreamt about this for such a long period of time. We worked hard as a unit for such a long period of time. And to see this now with us feels quite, you know, relieved as well. Because when you work hard for something and you eventually get it at the end, it feels really, really nice,” he added.
“Last night, we were having a good time. We had a blast with the teammates till very early in the morning. I didn’t sleep properly, but that’s absolutely fine with me. You know, not to have sleep after a day like that. I am totally fine. There is a lot of time for me to go back home and sleep. So, I’m going to catch up on that. But again, like I said, this moment was very, very special for all of us, and I want to live it. I want to leave each moment, each second, and each minute that is passing by. I want to make the most of it,” Rohit added.
He talked about the reason behind eating the grass on the Barbados wicket.
He said: “Nothing was scripted. I was feeling the moment. I went to the pitch because that pitch gave us this (the T20 World Cup trophy). We played on that particular pitch, and we won the game. That particular ground as well. I will remember that ground forever in my life and that pitch as well.
So I wanted to have a piece of it with me. So yeah, those moments are very, very special. And the place where all our dreams came true. I wanted something of it so that was the feeling behind it.”
