Ruturaj Gaikwad didn’t have a desirable start to his international test outside Asia as the 26-year-old managed only 5 runs in the first ODI against South Africa on Sunday at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
Led by Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan’s brilliant bowling performances, India had bundled the hosts out for a low total of only 116 runs, which is South Africa’s lowest ODI score at home.
The chase got a quick start with young debutant Sai Sudharsan cracking a boundary on the first ball he faced in ODI cricket. Ruturaj Gaikwad, too, got underway with a four off a free-hit off pacer Wiaan Mulder. However, apart from that, Gaikwad barely played an attacking shot and Mulder had his revenge when he dismissed the right-hander lbw.
It was a full delivery from Mulder on the middle stump which kept coming into Ruturaj Gaikwad. The batter missed his flick shot and the ball hit his pad. While the umpire Richard Kettleborough gave a huge lbw appeal not out, the South African skipper Aiden Markram took the DRS and got the on-field not-out decision overturned to out as the ball was crashing into the leg stump.
Gaikwad had to take the long walk back to the dressing room with just 5 runs to his name in 10 balls.
Ruturaj Gaikwad got trolled badly with memes on Twitter for his failure in 1st ODI vs South Africa:
Aiden Markram won the toss and elected to bat first. Meanwhile, Sudhasan and Iyer have got going and India are on course for a comfortable win.
