Actress Saiyami Kher Applauds Afghanistan For Their “Incredible” Win Over England

Indian actress Saiyami Kher wowed over Afghanistan for their “incredible” victory over the defending champions England in their World Cup 2023 group-stage encounter in Delhi on Sunday.

In front of a raucous crowd at the Arun Jaitley Stadium – a heavy number of Indian fans, too, supported Afghanistan – Hashmatullah Shahidi’s recorded their greatest-ever victory by defeating the 2019 World Cup winners.

Jos Buttler’s side was stunned by Rahmanullah Gurbaz before the spin troika of Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Rashid Khan, and Mohammad Nabi choked them to earn a 69-run victory.

This is Afghanistan’s only second-ever win in an ODI World Cup, first in 8 years since defeating Scotland in Australia in 2015.

Fans on social media erupted as Afghanistan caused a massive upset in Delhi.

Actress Saiyami Kher, famously known for her role in her debut Hindi film Mirzya, took to Twitter to express her joy and elation at the victory of an underdog team. She said it’s the best game of the tournament so far, and hailed Afghanistan for outplaying England altogether.

Saiyami Kher tweeted: “What a game! What a win! Best game of the WC. So happy for Afganistan (sic). Defending world champs totally outplayed. Truly incredible.”

Talking about the AFG vs ENG game, England decided to bowl first and it backfired. They were initially rocked by opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who smashed 80 runs in 57 balls but got run out. England made a comeback in the game through wickets in the middle overs before 23-year-old youngster Ikram Alikhil recorded a gritty half-century, scoring 58 runs in 66 balls. Cameos from Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman helped Afghanistan reach a competitive total of 284.

Afghanistan bowled much better than they did against India and had a hold over England right from the start. In the second over, Farooqi got Bairstow, and then the spin trio of Mujeeb, Rashid, and Nabi choked the rest of the batters with Naveen bowling out Jos Buttler.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman was named the Player of the Match for his all-round show.
