SA vs IND: In a thrilling encounter between South Africa and India in the first Test at Centurion, the spotlight shone brightly on Dean Elgar’s marathon innings that propelled the Proteas to a formidable total of 408 runs in the first innings. Facing a challenging pitch that favoured the seamers, Elgar exhibited exceptional skill, scoring an impressive 185 runs off 287 balls. His stellar performance, adorned with 28 boundaries, not only showcased his mastery but also placed South Africa firmly in the driver’s seat.

Despite a commendable 76-run contribution from Virat Kohli, India found themselves on the losing end, succumbing to a comprehensive defeat of innings and 32 runs. The match unfolded as a testament to South Africa’s preparation and resilience, leaving India stunned within a mere three days. The underdog South African squad displayed remarkable maturity, outperforming and overshadowing the world’s best Test squad.

The first session of the Test witnessed India grappling with the formidable seam movement of Rabada and debutant Nandre Burger. Despite KL Rahul’s brilliant century, India managed to post 245 runs in their first innings. South Africa, in response, strategically blunted the new ball with de Zorzi and Elgar, setting the stage for Elgar’s maiden hundred at Centurion.

Elgar’s dominance continued into the second innings, securing a substantial lead with a daddy hundred. Jansen and Bedingham, with significant contributions, further solidified South Africa’s position. With a commanding 163-run advantage, India’s chances of a comeback dwindled, and Rabada’s masterful bowling ensured the tourists would not recover.

Rohit Sharma, leading the Indian side, faced a challenging Test, scoring just 5 in the first innings and a duck in the second. Critics, including Sanjay Manjrekar, have pointed out his struggles as a Test captain, emphasizing a lack of strategic acumen and questionable bowling plans.

Sanjay Manjrekar, a cricket pundit, expressed concerns about Rohit Sharma’s captaincy during the Centurion Test. He highlighted a perceived underestimation of South Africa’s batting prowess after India’s first innings total of 245. Manjrekar specifically pointed out a pivotal moment where the bowling strategy, especially changes involving Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna, seemed flawed.

According to Manjrekar, these critical moments presented an opportunity for India to capitalize, but the team faltered. He criticized the bowling plans, noting instances where there was a lack of discipline. Manjrekar emphasized that a captain’s intervention during such phases is crucial to steer the team back on course. In his view, Rohit Sharma’s decisions during the Test were less than optimal, contributing to India’s downfall.

“I think there was a certain amount of underestimation of the South African batting after India got 245. But yes, it wasn’t one of Rohit Sharma’s best days or Test matches as captain. That was a blunder (starting with Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna after Lunch). These are the moments that you have to cash in. That was a huge mistake,” Manjrekar said.

“Plus, the bowling plans as well, not just the bowling changes. I was just amazed by what the Indian bowlers kept trying almost throughout the Test match. You had an instance of Marco Jansen getting the outside edge and the ball just falling short of KL Rahul. After that, there were a couple of deliveries in that same region, and then there was the bouncer, and then there was a full-length delivery, and then something going down the leg side. That was unexpected and that is somewhere where the captain could come in and say,’ Guys, time running now, let’s stick to discipline,’” he added.

The Centurion Test served as a wake-up call for the Indian team, urging them to reflect on their mistakes. From underestimating the opposition to questionable bowling strategies, the defeat exposed vulnerabilities that need addressing. As the squad looks ahead, there’s a pressing need for strategic adjustments and a reevaluation of leadership decisions.
