In this article, we will look at the scores of some of India’s batting legends, including the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Sachin Tendulkar, in their first Test match in South African conditions.
The ongoing India vs South Africa 2023/24 Test series was billed as the “final frontier” by the broadcaster. This is because South Africa remains the only country where India have not won a Test series they have played in.
Under Virat Kohli, India recorded their maiden Test series win in Australia on the 2018/19 tour, and backed it up with another series win under Ajinkya Rahane. India have previously won a Test series in England and New Zealand.
However, South Africa remains the unconquered territory for India. And it will remain that way until at least the next tour, because India lost the first of the two Tests by an innings and 32 runs.
Even though India have had some of the greatest ever Test batters in the likes of Tendulkar, Dravid, and Laxman, and they have had India’s greatest pace attack with Bumrah, Shami, Siraj, and previously Ishant, Bhuvneshwar, and Umesh, the Asian giants have failed to record a series win in South Africa.

South Africa is considered one of the toughest venues for visiting Asian batters, because there is significant swing and seam movement like in England conditions and extra bounce like in Australian conditions.
Virat Kohli hit a century in his first Test in South Africa

Virat Kohli played his maiden Test match in South Africa in 2013, and knocked a brilliant century in Johannesburg. He followed it up with a 96 in the same Test. In the same Test, Rohit Sharma, the current skipper, managed scores of only 14 and 6.
Virender Sehwag smashed 105 on his Test debut in Bloemfontein in 2001.
