Scott Styris Calls Suryakumar Yadav As The Short Term Captain And Names India’s Future Captain

The new era of Indian Cricket Team in T20Is has already started. Gautam Gambhir has replaced Rahul Dravid as the Head Coach of Team India after India secured the T20 World Cup 2024 title in style. Captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirement from T20I cricket after the event. It is now time for the young breed of players to stand up. The BCCI made a big decision by appointing Suryakumar Yadav as the captain of the Indian T20I team.

Hardik Pandya, who was the vice-captain, of the team under Rohit Sharma in the World Cup was snubbed due to his fitness issues. SKY had erased led India to a 4-1 series win against Australia and a 1-1 draw against South Africa in 2023. Now, as a full time T20I captain, he led India to a 2-0 series win against Sri Lanka with one match still to play in this series.

Sky has been the number one T20 batsman in the world in the last two to three years. Meanwhile, former New Zealand cricketer, Scott Styris, spoke about the captaincy style of Yadav and the decision to appoint him as the captain.

He termed SKY as the short term captain of the Indian T20I team as there is a lack of natural captain within the team. He also stated that if he does perform well in the bilateral series then he might remain as the skipper in the upcoming T20 World Cup in India in 2026.

“I think he’s a short-term option. I don’t think Gambhir has a natural captain among the players that he has right now. He’s buying himself time as to who will be the next long-term captain, you know, someone like Gill I think could do the job for 10 years for India, but he’s not quite ready right now, so I think it was a really smart decision to bring in someone with a bit more experience,” Scott Styris was quoted as saying by NDTV.

“If he (SKY) does a decent enough job, then he might be the captain at the next T20 World Cup. And then after that, you can look at Gill or any of the other potential options around. But yeah, I think it’s a really clever decision,” said Styris.
