Shoaib Akhtar Makes A Controversial Statement On David Warner’s MOT Award

The Australian cricket team led by Aaron Finch lifted their maiden World Cup trophy last night after defeating Kane Williamson-led New Zealand in the summit clash of T20 World Cup 2021. David Warner, who played an instrumental role in taking his team to the incredible victory, was awarded the Player of the Tournament award for his amazing performances.

For the unversed, David Warner emerged out as the second-highest run-scorer of the competition, having scored 289 runs off 7 games he played in the tournament. The star Australian opener scored three back-to-back half-centuries (89*, 49, and 53) in the last three matches. His last fifty of the tournament came in the crunch final. Australia needed 173 runs to win, David Warner provided his team with an explosive start.

Although he was soon dismissed after scoring his half-century (53 runs), but his job was done. The innings also capped off a terrific turnaround for the Australian star, who has been under fire for his poor form.

However, legendary Pakistani bowler Shoaib Akhtar wasn’t happy with David Warner winning the Player of the Tournament award as he felt that Babar Azam was the deserving candidate for that award. Babar was seen in a red-hot form in the tournament. He was the highest run-getter of the tournament, after having scored 303 runs off 6 games he played in the tournament.

Disappointed with David Warner getting the Man of the Tournament award, Shoaib Akhtar took to his Twitter and expressed his thoughts. In his Tweet, Akhtar claimed that Babar Azam deserved that prestigious award. He also called the decision unfair. He wrote:

Was really looking forward to see @babarazam258 becoming Man of the Tournament. Unfair decision for sure.”
