Shubman Gill is being predicted by many to finish as the highest run-scorer in the upcoming World Cup 2023. Such is the sublime form of the young India opener that few feel he will break Sachin Tendulkar‘s all-time ODI World Cup record of 673 runs, which the master set in the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.
While we will have to wait for the next six weeks to see if Gill breaks that record of Tendulkar or now, the youngster recently equaled a major record of Tendulkar.
Gill, aged 24, has been in surreal touch this year, racking up centuries and double centuries across the three formats.
Shubman Gill equals Sachin Tendulkar’s major record in ODIs:
He bagged the Man of the Series award in the 3-ODI series against Australia, even though he didn’t play in the 3rd ODI, for finishing as the leading run-scorer of the series with his scores of 74 and 104, helping India win the matches in Mohali and Indore. This was Shubman Gill’s 4th Man of the Series award in ODI cricket.
Gill has now equaled Tendulkar’s tally of 4 Man of the series awards for India in ODIs before turning the age of 25!
Most Player Of The Series award for India before turning 25:
Sachin Tendulkar – 4
Shubman Gill – 4*
It’s quite astonishing that his 4 Man of the Series award have come in only 13 ODI series. To see the context of this, Australia opener David Warner has only 3 Man of the Series award in 45 ODI series, while Babar Azam has 4 in 30 ODI series. Even Joe Root and Steve Smith has 4 Man of the Series awards in ODIs in their career so far. So Gill is already competing with some of the best-ever in the ODI format.
The youngster has shown great promise and signs of carrying the legacy of Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, and Virat Kohli, and he has started on the right foot.
Gill is the leading ODI run-scorer in 2023: he has amassed 1230 runs in 20 ODI knocks this year at an average of 72 with 5 centuries and 5 fifties.
