3 Similarities Between World Cup 2011 And World cup 2023

ODI World Cup 2023

Almost after 12 long years of winning the ODI World Cup 2011 on home soil, the Indian cricket team will once again enter the marquee tournament with the hopes of winning the cup for the country.  The ODI World Cup 2023 is just a couple of months away and the excitement around the same has been increasing with every passing day.

Meanwhile, the cycle of time never fails to surprise us. It has been 12 years since India last won the ODI cup. Though a lot of things have changed, but there are a few things that are very similar in both tournaments.

Here, in this article, we will discuss 3 similarities between ODI World Cup 2011 And ODI World Cup 2023:

1. Being played at home:

The iconic 2011 World Cup tournament was hosted by the BCCI (co-hosted by Sri Lanka) and took place in India. Interestingly, the 2023 edition of the tournament is being hosted by the BCCI and will take place in India. It has to be noted that this is for the first time that the BCCI is hosting a World  Cup tournament independently on its own.

2. Playing for an icon:

The image of Virat Kohli lifting Sachin Tendulkar on his shoulders during India’s victory lap at the Wankhede Stadium after the iconic win at the 2011 World Cup is still etched in everyone’s mind.

“Sachin Tendulkar has carried the burden of the nation for 21 years. It is time we carry him on our shoulders.” Virat Kohli had said.

12 years after that iconic moment, Virat Kohli is the biggest star in the star-studded team India. In fact, he is the lone player of the team India that defeat Sri Lanka in the final of the 2011 WC.

ODI World Cup 2023 could be for Virat Kohli what 2011 was for Tendulkar. The Indian cricket team played to win the tournament for the biggest cricketing star from India — Sachin Tendulkar, who was playing the last World Cup of his career. Cut to the present, there is a sentiment that Kohli is probably playing the last World Cup of his career and team India will play to win the cup for him.

3. Calm and composed captain:

In 2011, legendary captain MS Dhoni led the Indian cricket team to a historic World Cup win. Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian cricket team in ODI World Cup 2023. Just like Dhoni, Rohit is also known for his calm and composed personality and terrific captaincy skills. In fact, Dhoni and Rohit are the two most successful captains in IPL history, having led their respective teams (CSK and MI) to 5 titles each.
