Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has extended his support to Rohit Sharma to continue as captain of the Indian cricket team across all formats until the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Ever since India’s heartbreaking defeat in the T20I World Cup 2024, the debate about Rohit’s captaincy future, especially in T20Is, has been in full swing. Despite Rohit’s absence from T20Is for over a year, numerous reports suggest that the opener is set to make a comeback as the captain for the T20 World Cup scheduled in June this year.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were initially expected to return during the South Africa tour, but they requested a break from the entire white-ball leg.

In Rohit Sharma’s absence, Suryakumar Yadav will lead India in the T20Is against South Africa, and KL Rahul will be the captain for the ODIs. India has three T20Is and three ODIs ahead before continuing in the World Test Championship with a two-match Test series.

Meanwhile, Sourav Ganguly praised Rohit for his captaincy during the 2023 ODI World Cup held in India, where the Men in Blue achieved an impressive streak of 10 consecutive wins. However, India fell short in the final as Australia secured a six-wicket victory, securing their sixth ODI World Cup trophy. Speaking to ANI, Ganguly said:

“The problem is that many are not available. Surya is T20 captain, Surya is not a certainty in one-days. They have a different captain in one-days in KL Rahul and Test match obviously, Rohit wants to play.”

He added: “But as I said, once Rohit is back playing all formats, he should be the captain of India because he has done so well in the World Cup. And he is a leader, so I expect and presume that he will continue as captain till the T20 World Cup.”
