Indian Premier League (IPL) is the most extravagant, viewed and popular domestic T20 leagues in the world. In 2017, IPL completed its 10 years and the popularity has increased every year.
Over the years, we have seen some of the greatest cricketers come to India and participate in the Indian Premier League. From Chris Gayle to Rashid Khan, IPL has played a huge role in reviving careers and also give due recognition to young talent in India and around the world.
Talking about IPL’s success and popularity, Star Sports made an unbelievably big bid to quire the broadcasting rights of Indian Premier League. Star Sports made a bid of ₹ 16,347.50 crores and acquired the rights.
The second highest bid was made by Sony Television, who were willing to pay ₹ 11,050 crores, for the rights. However, it is noteworthy that Sony’s bid was for audience only in India, where Star made a global bid. The third highest bid was made by Facebook worth ₹ 3,900 crores for the digital content.
“We believe the IPL is a very powerful property, and we believe there is lots more value that can be created for fans of cricket on digital and TV”, Uday Shankar, the chairman of Star India, said.
“We would remain committed to ensure the growth of sports in this country continues to be driven by the power of cricket,” he added.
