On Monday, on Day 5 of the ongoing 5th and final Ashes 2023 Test at The Oval, Stuart Broad will be taking the first for one last time in his international cricket. Australia need 249 more runs with all 10 wickets in hand.
Though Australia have retained the Ashes Urn, there’s still plenty at stake for both teams: a victory or draw for Australia, who currently lead the series 2-1, will help them create history as then they would win their first Ashes series in England since 2001, while Ben Stokes’ side would want to take all 10 Aussie wickets to end the series 2-2. Lest anyone forgets, there are also WTC points at stake.
After Day 3, Broad had announced that he will be retiring at the end of this match, and thus this series.
The 37-year-old veteran England pacer has been phenomenal throughout the Ashes 2023 series: Broad is the second-highest wicket-taker at the moment with 20 scalps in this series, only 3 behind Mitchell Starc. Broad and England would be hoping that the senior seamer picks some more wickets on the final day of the series as Ben Stokes’ side push for a win.
Captain Ben Stokes posts an emotional Insta post ahead of Stuart Broad’s last day of Test cricket
England skipper Ben Stokes took to Twitter to post three pictures ahead of what would be an emotional day for him and the England team as it would be the last time Stuart Broad will be seen donning the England whites.
Here, check out Ben Stokes’ emotional Insta post for Stuart Broad:
In an international career that started in 2006, Broad has taken 600 Test wickets, 178 ODI wickets, and 65 T20I wickets.
In the press conference after his retirement announcement, Broad was asked how did he convey this decision to skipper Stokes.
The pacer replied: “At half-eight, I just texted Stokesy saying: ‘Can I come and see you?’. I walked in, shook his hand and said: ‘That’s me, thanks for everything you’ve done for me’. I feel really great, and I feel even better that we’ve had a brilliant day today. I was a bit nervous this morning thinking that if we lose early wickets, I could feel a bit devastated.”
