It was a fairytale ending to the glorious career of Stuart Broad as it couldn’t have been better. Broad bowled England to another dramatic win in the 5th Ashes Test match against Australia to leave a memorable Ashes series level at 2-2.
Stuart Broad Created A Unique Record
Stuart Broad, who was playing the final match of his Test career, ended it on a high as he became the first player in history to hit a six on the final ball and take a wicket on the final ball in Test cricket. It was a typical exuberant end to a magnificent career.
Broad picked the final wicket for England as Carey edged and Jonny Bairstow grabbed the catch. It was also his second wicket as Australia’s second innings got folded for 334 in the 384-run chase. Earlier, Broad smashed one final six before the England cricket team was bowled out for 395 runs on the fourth day of the game at The Oval on Sunday. Broad smashed his 55th six for England — putting him fifth on the all-time list of English six-hitters in tests.
Broad Talked About England’s Performance In Ashes 2023 Final Match
Meanwhile, after the game, while talking to Sky Sports, Stuart Broad talked about his performance and his team as well. He credited Woakes and Moeen Ali for setting the tone after the rain break. He said:
“Woakesy and Moeen set the tone unbelievably after the rain break. Once we got a couple we really began to believe. The crowd was so loud, we really jumped on the back of their energy. To take a couple of wickets to contribute to the team and win the Test match, it’s really special.
I’ve always enjoyed bowling to left-handers, so for my last spell to be moving it away! The pitch quickened up after the rain and had more zip”
He added: “A word for Moeen as well, he’s not officially announced he’s moving on but to put in that performance and help England win will be a dream come true for him. He’s been such a special friend.
I though switching the bails was an Aussie thing but must admit I might have made that up. If I’d learnt that 10 years ago I’d have been away. The Marnus one really made me smile. I had a couple of play and misses and it was get frustrating, so thought I’d change them, not the batter’s ones, the bowlers’ ones, and it worked.”
Stuart Broad was also asked about that one decision he could change that may have altered the fate of the series. He replied:
“I wouldn’t have taken the second new ball at Edgbaston. The new ball has been hard to bowl with all series. Once we took it, the ball skidded on and made it easier for Pat to find the boundary. [But] when you lose to a great team like Australia you hold your head high.”
