Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary cricketer, weighed in on India’s recent loss to South Africa in the first test at Centurion. He addressed the struggles of Indian batters, emphasizing that, apart from Kohli and KL Rahul, they faltered against South Africa’s formidable seam and pace on a lively wicket.
Gavaskar pointed out a crucial aspect highlighted by Captain Rohit Sharma – the difference in the practice wickets provided by South Africa before test matches. Sharma mentioned that these practice wickets don’t mirror the lively conditions of the actual matches, making it challenging for Indian batsmen to adapt.
In response, Gavaskar suggested a more effective preparation strategy for overseas tours. He advocated for discussions between the touring team and the home board to arrange matches against A teams or domestic champions of the hosting country. According to Gavaskar, players in these matches would be eager to impress selectors, giving the touring team quality practice against competitive opponents.
Gavaskar dismissed the idea of intra-squad matches, stating that it doesn’t make sense for various reasons. He highlighted that fast bowlers might not give their full effort in these matches due to the risk of injuries. Moreover, the conditions in intra-squad matches may not replicate those of the actual test matches, making them less beneficial in terms of preparation.
Drawing from his own experience, Gavaskar emphasized the importance of acclimating to the specific conditions of the host country. He suggested that playing practice matches against local teams or A teams would provide a more realistic simulation of match conditions, ultimately enhancing the touring team’s readiness for the challenges ahead.
Sunil Gavaskar Breaks Silence On Rohit Sharma’s Different Practice Wicket Comment

Gavaskar said: “Look, this might be the case, I don’t know. I just want to say that if you can play against A teams or the domestic champions of the touring country, their players will be looking to impress their selectors. So they will give it their all, be it a fast bowler or a batter.
When you plan your preparation for overseas tours, you should have discussions with the home board and request them to play against A teams or domestic champions. By doing so, you stand a good chance of getting good practice.
Playing intra-squad matches doesn’t make sense. It’s better you spend time at home and come here directly. Why? Your fast bowlers might not want to give their 100 percent in intra-squad matches because there are chances of injuries, say if a fast bowler bowls a bouncer to batters.
It’s not a recent phenomenon. It has happened in our time also. The problem comes from the difference in conditions. You have to get used to such conditions, you have to play practice matches for that.”
Gavaskar’s advice revolves around strategic and tailored preparation, ensuring that the touring team faces competitive opposition in conditions closely resembling those of the actual test matches.
