Former Indian cricketer and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has opened up about the speculations on the possible rift between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Well, just a day after Rohit Sharma was ruled out from the upcoming Test series against South Africa due to an injury, the news of Virat Kohli wanting to be rested from the ODI series broke the internet.
More than the reasons behind the decision, it was the timing of the announcements that led to speculations about a possible rift between the two players.
The rumors of an alleged rift between Virat and Rohit have been doing rounds on social media ever since the Mumbai cricketer took over the ODI captaincy of the national team from the Delhi batter last week. But legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar doesn’t want to add fuel to the fire and urged the cricket fans to be patient with both the cricketers as neither of them has come up and said anything on the matter.
Gavaskar also expressed his disappointment with Mohammad Azharuddin’s tweet on the alleged rift between Virat and Rohit. Gavaskar asked Azhar to share the inside information if he has any. He said:
“The question is, ‘is there anything simmering at all (between Kohli and Rohit)?’, Unless both the players come out with something, we should not jump to conclusions. Yes, Azharuddin has said something but if he has got some inside information about what has happened then he should be coming out and telling us what happened.”
He added:
“Till then, I will give the benefit of the doubt to both the players. Because both have served Indian cricket brilliantly and I don’t think it is fair at all for any one of us, without having exact information, to be pointing fingers at either of them,”
For the unversed, Azhar, via a Tweet, had expressed his concern over the alleged rift between both the batting stalwarts of team India. He had also questioned the timing of their breaks. He had tweeted:
“Virat Kohli has informed that he’s not available for the ODI series & Rohit Sharma is unavailable fr d upcoming test. There is no harm in takin a break but d timing has to be better. This just substantiates speculation abt d rift. Neither wil be giving up d other form of cricket.”
