The cricketing world witnessed a heart-wrenching moment on November 19, 2023, as India faced a devastating defeat in the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Having maintained a flawless record of 10 victories in 10 matches leading up to the final, the Indian team’s pursuit of championship glory was thwarted in a nail-biting clash.
India posted a competitive total of 240, courtesy of half-centuries from cricket maestros Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, along with a quickfire start from Rohit Sharma. However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the second innings, with Australian batsman Travis Head stealing the show with a spectacular 137-run innings. Head’s brilliance mirrored his impact in the ICC World Test Championship earlier that year, adding to the agony of Indian fans and players alike.
The defeat left Indian fans and players, including the likes of Kohli, Rohit, and Siraj, heartbroken. The emotional scenes on the field depicted the sheer disappointment of falling short in the final hurdle despite an outstanding campaign leading up to that moment. Tears were shed, but the resilience and sportsmanship displayed throughout the tournament were commendable.
As the cricketing world mourned India’s loss, the focus swiftly shifted to the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024, set to unfold in the Caribbean and the USA in June 2024. India, determined to bounce back, initiated their preparations with a 5-match T20I series at home. A noteworthy development was the inclusion of new players in the squad, with the dynamic Suryakumar Yadav announced as the captain.
The absence of Hardik Pandya, recovering from an ankle injury sustained in the World Cup 2023, paved the way for Suryakumar Yadav to lead the squad. The T20I series, scheduled to commence in November 2023, brought a wave of anticipation.

Every member, not only the players, all of India were very proud of the way we displayed our talent on the ground. That was the positive, the brand of cricket that we played throughout the tournament. And we are really proud of that,” Suryakumar said.
“It is difficult. It will take time. It can’t be that you get up next morning, and forget everything that happened. It was a long tournament. Obviously, we would have loved to win. But you got to look at the light at the end of the tunnel. You have to forget, and move on. It is a fresh team, with new boys and new energy. So, we are looking forward to this series,” he added.
During the press conference, a journalist pointed out that Suryakumar would be leading a team with “a lot of young guys who will play in a lot of World Cups.” In response, Suryakumar humorously interrupted, asserting, “I am also young.”
Suryakumar Yadav has received a lot of bashing for his performances in the ODI World Cup 2023. His ODI record is very poor despite a lot of backing from the captain qnd team management. However, his T20 records are outstanding. He is definitely the number 1 T20 batter in the world in the last two years.
