SA vs IND: In the second test match between India and South Africa, cricket enthusiasts witnessed a captivating clash in Cape Town, marking a pivotal moment in the two-match series. After a setback in Centurion, where India trailed 1-0, the anticipation surrounding this face-off was palpable.
The match, famously known as the New Year’s Test, etched its place in history as the shortest Test match ever, concluding in just four and a half sessions. Dean Elgar, a stalwart in the cricketing world, bid adieu to his career as an international conductor.
As the sun rose over Cape Town, South Africa opted to bat first. What transpired in the morning session was nothing short of sensational. Mohammed Siraj, the Indian pacer, unleashed a bowling masterpiece, claiming six wickets and restricting the Proteas to a mere 55 runs – their lowest Test score since readmission.
India, in response, initially held the lead, but their fortunes took a dramatic turn. A spectacular collapse ensued, with six wickets falling consecutively, leaving them without a run. South Africa skillfully chipped away at India’s lead of 98 runs, setting the stage for a tense battle.
Jasprit Bumrah, ever on the money, secured a fifer, further solidifying India’s position in the game. However, Aiden Markram’s century on the challenging pitch extended South Africa’s advantage by more than fifty runs, marking one of his finest Test performances.
After Siraj removed the significant threat, Bumrah concluded the proceedings with a stellar figure of 6/61. The stage was set for India to chase down a target of 79 runs in the fourth inning, a task they accomplished. This not only secured a 1-1 draw in the series but also marked India’s maiden Test win in Cape Town.
Amidst the on-field theatrics, an audio clip went viral, capturing a heated exchange between Virat Kohli and the aggressive bowler Nande Burger. Known for his aggressive bowling style, Burger troubled Indian batters on the seam-friendly pitch. Kohli, never one to back down, responded to Burger’s aggression with a fierce determination, heard saying, “Tereko 30 runs marunga ek ball mai dalle…dal tu length ball.”
Burger’s tactic of going after Virat Kohli, though bold, is not without its risks. Kohli, renowned for his ability to give it back with the bat, has dismantled the careers of various bowlers who dared to challenge him. In this game, the verbal exchange added an extra layer of intensity, showcasing the fierce competitiveness on the field.
