This Tweet Shows Why Rohit Sharma Is India’s Backbone In T20Is: India’s loss to South Africa on Thursday evening in Delhi, in the first T20I of the five-match series, with Rishabh Pant leading the country for the first time further underlined the importance of Rohit Sharma’s captaincy as Pant was found to be clueless when David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen launched an attack on the Indian bowlers who failed to defend even a gigantic total of 211.

Rohit Sharma was rested for IND VS SA

Rohit Sharma, who took over the white-ball captaincy after the T20 World Cup last year and Test captaincy earlier this year, has been rested for this South Africa series.

But his astute and calmness was dearly missed by the Men In Blue in the first T20I, especially during Miller and van der Dussen’s onslaught.

Not only this, but Sharma has also missed some games earlier this year, and India have had to suffer losses in all of them!

Wisden India’s Tweet Proves Why Rohit Sharma Is The Backbone Of Team India

A stat pointed out by the Wisden India website has got the fans talking. This stat highlighted why Rohit Sharma’s presence in the team, as a player and captain, is so crucial.

The Indian team has been at the two sides of the extreme with and without Rohit Sharma in the side this year. India have played a total of 17 matches in 2022; strikingly, but not so shockingly, they have lost all the 6 matches in which Sharma wasn’t playing, while have won all the 11 matches with Sharma in the side!

0 losses in 11 games under Rohit’s captaincy ✅
0 win in 6 games under Any other captain ❌

Starting from the tour of South Africa, which Sharma missed due to injury, after winning the Boxing Day Test last year in Centurion, India went down in the series losing both the Tests in Johannesburg and Cape Town followed by a 3-0 white-wash in the ODI series with KL Rahul as the captain.

Sharma returned to lead the side in the home series against West Indies – cleansweeping Kieron Pollard’s team 3-0 each in ODIs and T20Is – followed by 2-0 Test series win over Sri Lanka and 3-0 T20I series win over the same opposition, before India lost to South Africa in Thursday under Pant with Sharma rested.

Clearly, Sharma’s impact as a batsman and his leadership as a skipper was missed in these losses.
