Virat Kohli surpassed his idol Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most ODI hundreds, reaching his 50th century in the World Cup semi-final. Incidentally, Tendulkar, present at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, witnessed Kohli achieve this milestone. In addition to breaking Tendulkar’s record for ODI hundreds, Kohli also set a new mark for the most runs in a single edition of the ODI World Cup, accumulating an impressive 765 runs in 11 matches during the 2023 edition.
Surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI hundreds is an achievement many might not have predicted, but Virat Kohli managed to achieve this feat 173 matches faster than the legendary opener.
At the age of 35, Kohli boasts an impressive tally of 80 international hundreds and has amassed over 26,000 runs across all formats. Despite experiencing both highs and lows in his career, the former captain appears more determined and hungry for success than ever.
“Tough Job For Virat Kohli To Break Sachin Tendulkar’s Record” – Brian Lara
While several cricketers and experts have backed Kohli to break Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record of 100 international hundreds., however, legendary West Indies cricketer Brian Lara believes that surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record will be a challenging task for Virat Kohli.
Lara emphasized that Kohli is not getting any younger, and age will eventually catch up with the batting star, despite being one of the fittest cricketers in the game. He said:
“How old is Kohli now? 35, right? He has 80 but still needs 20. If he scores five centuries every year he’d need four more years to equal Tendulkar. Kohli will be 39 then. Tough job, very tough job,”
He added: “I can’t say with certainty, no one can. Those saying Kohli will break Tendulkar’s 100-centuries record won’t be taking cricketing logic into account. 20 centuries seem a long way away. Most cricketers can’t score that in their entire career. I won’t be adventurous and say Kohli will do it. Age doesn’t stop for anyone,”
