Travis Head recently shared insights into the much-discussed post-Ashes drinks mix-up. As foxsports.com.au reported, the Australians lingered at the Oval anticipating a traditional drink with England. Yet, a source conveyed that this long-standing custom did not occur, leading to Australian disappointment.
England was quick to defend their position. The team revealed that retirement speeches for Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali extended their stay in the dressing room. Consequently, they vacated the premises between 10.45pm and 11pm, a significant duration after the series concluded.
Ben Stokes, the English skipper, took to Twitter to offer clarity. He tweeted, “We decided to meet up in the nightclub rather than the dressing room.” This was in response to the delay caused by unexpected events in their camp.
Head, in his appearance on the Willow Talk podcast, validated England’s stance. He expressed that the prolonged absence was not intentional. The retirement speeches simply lasted more than anticipated.
Discussing the unexpected nightclub encounter, Head stated it wasn’t pre-planned. “Post-match, we waited awhile. They were preoccupied with retirements and some departing staff. We attempted to join them multiple times but were repeatedly postponed,” Head shared. He further elaborated, “A few of us did rendezvous with them later. The nightclub meeting wasn’t strategic. On a Monday night in London, options are limited. So, both teams coincidentally ended up in the same spot.”

The drink they shared? “One or two Vodka Red Bulls before heading to catch our flights,” he chuckled.
Interestingly, Head pointed out that some England players, particularly those he’s friendly with, took the opportunity to jest about the incident. Recounting a playful exchange, Head mentioned, “Ben Duckett teased about the supposed snub, and I playfully retorted. It’s all in good fun.”
Head emphasized the media’s role in amplifying the event. “It became a bigger deal than it was. Such miscommunications occur,” he mused.

Zak Crawley, England’s opener, corroborated Head’s narrative in The Vaughany and Tuffers Cricket Club podcast. He remarked on the retirement speeches extending their internal discussions. Crawley expressed, “Post-match debriefs typically are short. But that night, with ‘Broady’, ‘Mo’, and a physio leaving, it dragged on.”
He furthered, “Our delay was unintentional. It’s unfortunate the timings clashed. No one’s to blame. It just didn’t align.”
In sum, the post-Ashes drinks event, a topic of much debate, seems a simple matter of mismatched timings. Both teams have put the incident behind them, reflecting on it with humor and understanding.
