All The New Rules Of IPL 2022 Mega Auction You Need To Know

IPL 2022 mega auction is going to be the biggest auction ever in the history of the Indian Premier League.

The IPL 2022 mega auction is set to be hosted on February 12 and 13 in Bangalore. The 8 existing franchises have already announced their retentions and the purse have deducted accordingly.

The retention rules for the upcoming IPL 2022 mega auction state that a maximum of four players can be retained by the eight current teams in two different combinations: three Indians and one overseas, or two Indians and two overseas.

The two new franchises – based in Lucknow and Ahmedabad – will be able to pick three players of their choice – with a maximum of one overseas – from the rest of the players before the auction.

Also, the purse for the IPL 2022 mega auction is likely to be INR 90 crore, which is more than the INR 85 crore that was available in the last auction.

Now, there are different salary caps based on the number of retentions:

  • If a team retains 4 players, Rs 42 crore will be cut from the purse.
  • If a team retains 3 players, Rs 33 crore will be cut from the purse.
  • If a team retains 2 players, Rs 24 crore will be cut from the purse.
  • If a team retains only one player, it will lose Rs 14 crore from its purse value.
  • Each uncapped player retained will cost Rs 4 crore each.

Further, the board has also cleared that the salary of each player in case of four retentions will be Rs 16 crore for Player 1, Rs 12 crore for Player 2, Rs 8 crore for players 3 and Rs 6 crore for Player 4.In case of three retentions, the fee for Player 1 will be Rs 15 crore, Player 2 will be Rs 11 crore and Player 3 will be 7 crore. Two retentions will lead to a salary of Rs 14 crore for Player 1 and Rs 10 crore for Player 2. If a team keeps only one player, it will have to pay him Rs 14 crore per season.

The BCCI clarified that if the player salary agreed upon is higher than the amount specified above – the two parties can negotiate on the salary – then the higher of the two shall be deducted from the purse.

Notably, there will be no Right-to-match cards (RTM) available for the franchises this time, as they were in the previous mega auction.

The BCCI has given a couple of more weeks for the two new franchises – Lucknow and Ahmedabad – to finalize their top three picks from the available pool of player, before the IPL 2022 mega auction.

Teams like Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals have used full available retentions by retaining 4 players and will look to build their squads around these four core players. Punjab Kings, on the other hand, have retained only 2 players as they look to rebuild their squad.
