The left-hander was dismissed by off-spinner Sajid Khan in his last Test innings. As he walked back to a standing ovation and a huge round of applause from the SCG crowd, Warner handed over his helmet and gloves to a young child near the boundary line.

After hugging Steve Smith, who was standing at the boundary line as a gesture to allow Warner to take in all the applause and wave his bat to the crowd for one last time in Test cricket, Warner subtly gave his helmet and gloves to a young boy near the SCG staircase. The child was elated at receiving this special gift from one of Australia’s greatest-ever batters.

Warner cited his own example – that he was a white-ball monster at the start of his career, but transitioned superbly to red-ball game.

David Warner said: “Hopefully the young kids out there can follow in my footsteps, white ball cricket to Test cricket, it’s the pinnacle of our sport. So keep working hard and play the red ball game which is entertaining as well. Thanks everyone.”
