A much-awaited debut of Sarfaraz Khan was truly a spectacular show as the 26-year-old right-hander from Mumbai blitzed his way to 62 runs in 66 balls but got run out and his innings ended in a cruel fashion.

The unavailability of Virat Kohli, poor form of Shreyas Iyer, and the injury to KL Rahul paved the way for the Test debut of Sarfaraz Khan, the man who averaged 69 in first-class cricket coming into his first game for India.

He was given his debut Test cap by Indian legend Anil Kumble and his father, Naushad Khan, and his wife were also invited to the ceremony at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium. There were emotional scenes in the morning as Sarfaraz’s father and wife shed tears of happiness.

In the evening, more emotions flowed as Sarfaraz Khan cracked a thoroughly entertaining half-century, taking apart the England spinners. The right-hander walloped 9 fours and a six in his knock of 62 runs in 66 balls. However, as he looked set for an epic century on debut, he got run-out due to some poor calling by Ravindra Jadeja.

Sarfaraz brought up his half-century in the 77th over of India’s innings with a single off Tom Hartley. He raised his bat to the dressing room and the crowd, in which his father and wife were seen applauding with huge smiles on their faces.

Before the run out, Sarfaraz and Jadeja shared a partnership of 77 runs out of which 62 were scored by the debutant.

In the post-day press conference, Sarfaraz said, “I told Jaddu Bhai to keep talking to me while I bat as I like talking while batting – he supported me a lot today.”

Earlier, it was captain Rohit Sharma who notched up his 11th Test ton. India are 326/5 at stumps on Day 1 in Rajkot.
