Mitchell Starc has made it a habit of producing jaffas. The balls that could be called unplayable deliveries, the ones on which even the most experienced and in-form batters in the world would succumb. The ones that make for a perfect compilation for a thrilling reel. Most of them would, of course, be bowled dismissals.

Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique had the misfortune of bagging a pair – that is dismissals for a duck in both innings of a Test match (or a first-class game) – in the Sydney Test against Australia. And both times he was dismissed by Mitchell Starc in the first over of Pakistan’s both innings.

While in the first innings Shafique made a poor shot selection by going after a very wide delivery outside the off-stump and edging to the second slip, in the second innings, he got a brutal jaffa from Starc.

Starc had set Shafique up with a couple of balls that were slanted across on and outside the off-stump. He then hurled a vicious delivery that swung in a little before pitching and seamed in.

Shafique played down the wrong line – expecting the ball once again to be on or outside the off-stump – and the ball snaked past his inside edge to hit the top of the off and middle stumps. Shafique stood there dumbfounded while Mitchell Starc celebrated with his finger toward the sky before being mobbed by his teammates.

Harsha Bhogle on commentary hailed it as the “kind of delivery you dream of bowling”.

Meanwhile, Aamer Jamal’s six-wicket haul helped Pakistan bundle Australia out for 299 runs, and, in quite a surprising event, Pakistan took a lead, though only of a slender 14 runs. However, Pakistan have started off poorly in their second innings, losing Shafique and skipper Shan Masood for ducks.
