Nobody has seen his fanbase grow during and after the World Cup 2023 as much as Mohammed Shami.

Fans have continued to admire the senior India fast bowler who finished as the leading wicket-taker in the World Cup 2023, despite being on the bench for India’s first four matches.

Mohammed Shami took 24 wickets in the World Cup 2023 in only 7 matches. He went wicketless only once in 7 games. He averaged only 10.5 with the ball, by far the best in the tournament.

Mohammed Shami took 3 five-wicket hauls in the World Cup, including a record-breaking 7-wicket haul in the semi-final against New Zealand. His 7/57 vs the Kiwis in the semi-final at the Wankhede is now the best bowling figures by an Indian men’s bowler in ODI cricket.

In a recent interview with PUMA, Mohammed Shami spoke of his upbringing in his village. He revealed that he enjoyed driving a tractor and a truck and he even landed his father’s tractor in a pond! He talked of his other hobbies as well, including fishing and riding cards and bikes, however, he’s now stopped driving bikes lest risk an injury.

“I like travelling, fishing. I like driving a lot. I like driving bike and cars. But after playing for India, I have stopped driving bikes. What if I get injured? I drive bike on highways, may be sometimes in village when I go to meet my mom,” Shami said on PUMA’s YouTube channel.

“Zameen se hi aaya hu. Kheto ki jo booghi hoti hai, I have driven tractor, bus, trucks. I have driven bus in truck. One of my school friends had a truck in his house. He told me to drive. I was small then and was driving on a ground. I drove our tractor into the pond too. My father scolded me.”

Shami is currently recovering from an ankle injury. He is named in the squad for the 2 Tests in South Africa, but his participation depends on his fitness clearance.
