VIDEO: Ravindra Jadeja Was Banned By ICC Because Of This Throw

India took the second Test comfortably after winning by an innings and 53 runs. The team was buoyed by Ravindra Jadeja’s all-round performance – A fine half-century in the first innings followed by a five wicket performance while bowling. Ravindra Jadeja went on to win the Man of the Match award but had to also contend with a ban in the upcoming third test at Pallekele.

Ravindra Jadeja also received a 50% fees fine and three demerit points. The reason behind this is he was found guilty of breaching the code 2.2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for a Player. The rule states that “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International match.”

Previous additions:

The ban was given because Ravindra Jadeja had received a similar 50% cut and three demerit points during an earlier test match. In the New Zealand series, he was found violating Code 2.2.11 and with Saturday’s three points, he reached the threshold of 4. The four demerit points have been converted to two suspension points.

The six demerit points will continue to remain on Jadeja’s record. If he reaches the threshold within the next 24-month period, the two suspension points will get converted to 4 points.

What exactly happened?

Why was Ravindra Jadeja given the ban? The reason happened during an incident in the 58th over, when he fielded the ball off his own bowling and threw it back at the batsman who had not actually left the crease he was standing. Dimuth Karunaratne narrowly avoided being hit by the ball and the umpires denoted that the throw was “dangerous”.

Ravindra Jadeja also accepted the punishment and allowed the sanction that was placed upon him. This means that there will be no need for a formal hearing. The charge was placed by the on-field umpires – Bruce Oxenford and Rod Tucker along with third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge.

All the breaches carry a fine of 50 to 100 percent and demerit points. Watch the video here:
