India will have Kuldeep Yadav to thank for keeping India’s first innings afloat in the Ranchi Test along with Dhruv Jurel on day 2 of the Test match.

England have taken the upper hand at the JSCA international stadium as at stumps on Day 2, India are on 219/7, still trailing by 134 more runs on a pitch that has low bounce and is playing tricks now. Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir’s four-wicket haul, after Joe Root’s century on day 1, has put England in this strong position. For India, first, it was opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is in dream form, who scored 73 runs while others stuttered around him.

Then, India were struggling at 177/7 before Jurel and Kuldeep Yadav joined hands to see the side unscathed until the conclusion of the day. Kuldeep batted for 72 runs balls and scored 17 runs – his survival and being in the middle with Jurel is right now more important than the runs he scores.

While Kuldeep was batting, India captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill imitated Kuldeep’s batting style in the dressing room. Kuldeep’s stance and bat swing are a bit unusual, with him crouching more than normal batters and his bat swing being like a whip. This made for interesting viewing as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill mimicked Kuldeep Yadav’s batting style.

The pitch is deteriorating and it’s going to get tougher for India to chase anything more than 170 in the last innings.

Joe Root said this about the pitch, “It looks like the pitch will keep deteriorating. The wicket was keeping low, unlike the previous wicket.:

Earlier in the day, it was Ravindra Jadeja who returned with a four-wicket haul, but after Root and Ollie Robinson had collected crucial runs and taken England to what now looks a winning first innings total.
