Sourav Ganguly is one of the most influential leaders in cricket history. He led India with utmost passion and dignity for a very long period of time, and many believe that it was under his captaincy that a whole generation of Indian cricketers flourished and Indian cricket started getting the respect it deserved.
Former Indian World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev, who led India to their first ever World Cup victory in 1983, once said on a news channel that a lot of credit of ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 victory goes to Sourav Ganguly because he laid a very strong foundation during his captaincy and gave confidence to players like Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh and many others.
Apart from his brilliant leadership skills, Ganguly was also a world class batsman. In ODI cricket, Ganguly was very effective at the top of the order for India, alongside Sachin Tendulkar. Ganguly, who was also known as ‘God of off-side’ played some cracking strokes towards point and covers and frustrated Akram with his top class batting.
