Few batters in the world have done to James Anderson what Yashasvi Jaiswal did to the England legend during his blockbuster double century in India’s second innings in Rajkot.
Memories of George Bailey smashing James Anderson for 28 runs in Perth in the 2013/14 Ashes were revoked when 22-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was only two years old when Anderson made his Test debut, walloped three sixes in an over on Day 4, Sunday, in Rajkot.
In the 85th over of India’s innings, with England players tiring in the heat of Rajkot and India’s lead already beyond 450, the young left-hander took down the 41-year-old veteran who is only 5 wickets away from 700 Test wickets.
It was a display of Jaiswal’s class, power, timing, and smarts. As Anderson bowled with a 7-2 field, packing the offside, Jaiswal meticulously shifted himself across the crease and collected three sensational sixes on three consecutive balls.
With an off-side heavy field, Anderson tried to bluff and bowled a straight ball. Jaiswal had moved across and easily picked up the full toss for a six over deep square leg. Next, Yashasvi Jaiswal took a couple of steps down and smoked a full delivery outside the off-stump over cover for another maximum. Then a length ball outside the off-stump was disdainfully dispatched over Andeson’s head for a maximum down the ground.

India set England a target of 557 runs. Jaiswal scored 214* off 236 balls and Sarfaraz Khan scored 68* off 72 balls, the latter making two half-centuries in two innings on his Test debut. Earlier, Shubman Gill missed out on a well-deserved century, getting run out for 91, falling only 9 runs away from a century. Joe Root and Rehan Ahmed went for over 100 runs. India captain Rohit Sharma declared India’s innings half an hour before Tea. India have more than four sessions to bowl England out and take a 2-1 lead in the series.
