Former India captain Virat Kohli managed only 11 runs in the first innings of the Edgbaston Test on Friday as he was dismissed chopping-off to a Matthew Potts delivery as India further slipped to 71/4 after being asked to bat first by England skipper Ben Stokes.
In his 19-ball stay, Kohli had looked confident only while leaving deliveries; he collected two fours in his knock – one a streaky boundary off an inside edge running away to fine leg while another was of a poor delivery from Potts on the leg stump that he guided to fine leg again.
But Potts, who had made a successful Test debut vs New Zealand in the three Tests earlier this month, corrected himself quickly and once again tested Kohli’s patience outside the off-stump.

Virat Kohli chops on his own stumps

Going on the wide of his crease angle, Potts swung the ball away on length but upon pitching the ball sharply seamed in to Kohli, who was on his front foot already looking to defend.
Upon realizing that the ball is well outside off-stump and the lbw and bowled equation were unlikely, Kohli decided to leave the ball and shouldered arms. However, he was a bit late on it and managed to inside edge it onto his sticks. Kohli stood there watching Potts run on a celebratory speed with the England players surrounding and cheering.

Kohli was coming off a couple of confident knocks in the warm-up game against Leicestershire where he scored 33 and 67. But couldn’t do much under the cloudy skies against the likes of James Anderson and Matthew Potts. While Kohli’s overall Test average continues to hover around the 50 mark, his numbers recently have been mediocre by any standards: since the start of 2021, Kohli averages an ordinary 29 in 25 Test innings.
Unsurprisingly, he was trolled heavily on Twitter after his dismissal for a cheap score.
Here are some of the hilarious tweets on Kohli’s low score today:

74 inns without an International century for Kohli, last Int’l century was against Bangladesh without Shakib & Mustafizur, in India on 23rd November 2019. Kohli’s Test batting average since 1st January 2020 is just 27.48 in 31 inns. Virat Kohli is massively over-rated.
