Former India opener, Virender Sehwag, has asked the young players to adopt an aggressive style of batting in Test cricket. He has asked players to replicate the Baseball type of gameplay. England under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum bat aggressively and scores an average of 5 runs per over. He feels that if you go for your shots, score quick runs, then you put more pressure on the opposition team.
“England are scoring at five runs an over. In our playing days, Australia averaged 4 runs per over. If you attack rivals in Test cricket, there are more chances of your team winning the contest,” Sehwag was quoted as saying by PTI.
Virender Sehwag urges the current batters to play aggressively in Test cricket
He wants the batters to play an aggressive brand of cricket in test cricket and make it enjoyable. Sehwag feels that if you score quickly and deal in boundaries and sixes then more fans will come to the stadium to watch the Test matches. He also cited his own example where he scored a triple century in just 270 deliveries. Sehwag feels that the current batters can score 400 runs if they face 270 balls.
“If anyone develops an aggressive game that suits Test cricket, there is no problem. We want people to come to the stadium and watch Test cricket. I scored a triple century in 270 balls in Test cricket. Today’s players might score 400 if they face that many deliveries,” he added.
Sehwag was one of the greatest and devastating openers in Test cricket. The Indian opener smashed 8586 runs from 180 innings at an average of 49.34 and a strike rate of 82.23. He smashed two triple-tons and six double-hundreds. Sehwag always went for his shots and put the bowlers and the opposition team on the backfoot right from the start of play.
