Peshawar Zalmi captain Babar Azam was mercilessly trolled by the former Australia captain and now commentator Michael Clarke during the Qualifier of the PSL 2024 season.

Babar’s Peshawar Zalmi lost the Qualifier against Mohammad Rizwan’s Multan Sultans on Thursday evening in Karachi. Zalmi were restricted to only 146, which is a very under-par score in PSL, especially in Karachi, and Multan chased it down comfortably in 18.3 overs and with 7 wickets in hand.

Babar Azam has been brutally criticised by everyone for his knock of 46 runs in 42 balls. Babar’s innings put pressure on his batting partners who lost their wickets and none of the other Zalmi batters could score more than 30 runs.

This slow knock meant Zalmi ended up with a total of less than 150, which is incredibly difficult to defend in PSL, no less against the best team of the season, Multan Sultans.

Such a horrific and match-losing knock it was from the Zalmi captain that commentator Michael Clarke said Babar Azam’s dismissal in the 14th over of the innings was a blessing for his own team as it brought it would give a chance to finishers and power-hitters Rovman Powell and Paul Walter to make an impact on the game.

After Babar Azam’s wicket, Clarke said on air, “Very rarely do you say it’s a good thing when Babar gets out. You never want him to get out because he’s an absolute class player. He has been in terrific form. But, maybe maybe the extra power here, looking for boundaries, I think that’s where they are at now. I think they got to go a fraction harder and I think they have got to risk it all to try and get above that 170-mark.”

For Sultans, Usama Mir and Chris Jordan picked two wickets each to halt Peshawar under 150. The chase was killed in the opening partnership of 61 runs in less than 8 overs as Yasir Khan blasted 54 runs in 37 balls. Mir was declared the Player of the Match for his figures of 2/16.

Babar Azam’s team still has another chance to enter the final, when they play the winner of Eliminator 1 in Eliminator 2.
