Touted as a future India captain, Jasprit Bumrah already has shown plenty of leadership qualities in his career. In the post-match interview after the Cape Town Test, he also showed his modesty and humility by not accepting the credit Mohammed Siraj gave him for his success.
Mohammed Siraj was picked as the Man of the Match for his six-wicket haul in the first innings that bowled South Africa out for only 55 runs in Newlands. India went on to win the match by 7 wickets and draw level the series 1-1. This was only the second time since South Africa’s readmission that India returned with a draw and not a Test series loss.
Jasprit Bumrah showed his humility by not accepting the credit from Siraj
Siraj brought Jasprit Bumrah alongside him to the interview to translate his answers from Hindi to English. In his answer, Siraj also gave credit to Bumrah for sharing his experience about the conditions and the right length to bowl on the Newlands surface.
Siraj said: “Jassi bhai hamesha jab start karte hain toh message milta hai ki kya wicket pe kon si line or length better hai. Toh wo message milne se mujhe zyada sochne ki zarurat nahi rehti hai, bas consistent wo chiz pe work karenge to success milega. Bas yahi. Wo saamne end pe rahe toh bohot hi acha lagta hai.”
In his translation, though, Bumrah didn’t mention himself or the credit that Siraj gave him. He instead gave the credit for Siraj’s success to the bowling unit and the management, and not himself.
Translating Siraj’s answer, Bumrah said: “So yeah, because when we play along together, he gets the message earlier because of your experience. We try to analyse the wicket quicker so that communication goes in the bowling circuit that this is the wicket and this is what we are looking to do. So that helps him sometimes.”
Siraj praised Bumrah during the presentation in his answer in Hindi and gave him credit.
Bumrah of course edited that part out in the English translation.
Of course.
