Hardik Pandya ruled out from the Afghanistan T20I series; Gaikwad likely to lead India vs AFG
As mentioned above, Pandya is still in the recovery process from the ankle injury that he sustained during the World Cup 2023. He missed the South Africa tour and is set to miss the 3 T20Is against Afghanistan next month. Pandya will make his return straight in the IPL 2024, leading the Mumbai Indians, whom he’s rejoined after a two-year stint leading Gujarat Titans.
With Pandya injury, Suryakumar Yadav also injured, and Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah likely to be given a rest from the Afghanistan T20I series – which is sandwiched between the Test series in South Africa and at home vs England – it is likely that Ruturaj Gaikwad will lead the side. However, Gaikwad himself is also dealing with a finger injury that he picked in South Africa.
