Sophie Molineux brought in her Australian DNA to turn the WPL 2024 final on its head as she took three wickets of the Delhi Capitals in her first over in a match-turning middle-overs spell.
Delhi had gotten off to a sensational start through a 64-run opening stand between Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning. However, Sophie Molineux, a left-arm spinner from Victoria, put brakes on DC’s run rate and plucked out three quick wickets in the 8th over of the innings.
In the powerplay, Shafali went all guns blazing at Delhi’s home ground, the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Verma blasted 44 runs in 27 balls, clobbering 2 fours and 3 sixes to give scares to RCB fans as Delhi took the first honours in the final.
However, an over after the field restrictions were lifted, Sophie Molineux turned the game with a magical spell of spin bowling. She first had Verma, caught by Wareham at deep mid-wicket as she mis-connected her slog sweep. Molineux then went bang bang in the same over to get rid of the in-form batters Jemimah Rodriguespaparazzi and Alice Capsey, both dismissed for ducks, and both clean bowled.
These three wickets meant that Sophie Molineux went straight up the top of the wickets charts with 12 scalps in the tournament so far.
