Watch: Smriti Mandhana’s Eyes Fill Up After RCB’s 1-Run Loss On Last Ball vs DC

RCB captain Smriti Mandhana’s eyes welled up following her side’s heartbreaking loss in match number 17 of the WPL 2024 season, to the Delhi Capitals.

On Sunday night, the fans witnessed an epic WPL game with Meg Lanning’s Capitals clinching the win by only one run on the last ball, overcoming a stunning onslaught from RCB’s Richar Ghosh, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

In the chase of 182 runs, Ellyse Perry cracked 49 (32), and Sophie Devine scored 26 (16), but the limelight-stealing knock came from wicket-keeper Richa Ghosh, who blasted 51 (29), but couldn’t take her side over the line on the last ball.

With 2 runs needed from one ball, Ghosh hit spinner Jess Jonassen to point, where Shafali Verma did well to keep her nerves calm in picking the ball and giving a good throw at the non-striker’s end where Jonassen ran Ghosh out, thus winning DC the game by 1 run.

Richa Ghosh laid on the ground as RCB suffered a major heartbreak. This win confirmed DC’s place in the top two, while RCB is now competing with UP Warriorz for the one remaining spot in the playoffs, with one game in hand.

RCB captain Smriti Mandhana gave a reaction of sadness in the dugout after realizing that Ghosh had been run out. Moments later, she came onto the field to console Richa who had given her all with the bat.

Smriti Mandhana hugged Richa and seemed to have a tear or two in her eyes. The RCB skipper looked emotional as she consoled Richa.

In the post-match ceremony, the RCB skipper said, “We have seen a lot of Richa in WPL and international cricket, Perry was going well, unfortunately she got run out. The game could have gone anywhere in the last ball and good on Delhi as well to keep their nerve and win. One run does not make us a bad team. Good effort with the shorter boundary to restrict them to 180. We really believed that we could chase this down. Would tell the girls to keep their heads high and come back stronger the day after.”
