[Watch] Sri Lankan Players Enraged After Third Umpire’s Huge Blunder In Soumya Sarkar’s Dismissal

Carrying on from their history of the past few years, a new incident was added to this rivalry on Wednesday as Bangladesh’s Soumya Sarkar was given a reprieve by a massive blunder from the third umpire that left the Sri Lankan players furious, and cricket the fans shocked. Even the commentators were surprised by the mistake of the third umpire, Masudur Rahman, in the second T20I between the two teams in Sylhet.

On the first ball of the fourth over of Bangladesh’s innings, Soumya Sarkar played a pull shot to a back-of-length ball from left-arm pacer Binura Fernando. Soumya Sarkar failed to make the desired connection and underedged the ball to the wicket-keeper Kusal Mendis. The bowler and the keeper went up in appeal and the on-field umpire gave it out quickly.

Sarkar, though, took a review immediately. The third umpire asked for Ultraedge to check for the edge and there was a clear spike when the ball passed the bat. Soumya Sarkar, too, had already started to walk off. However, the third umpire commented that he could see a “clear gap” between the bat and ball and that he was “satisfied” that the spike on ultra edge was not from the ball nicking the bat, and asked the on-field umpire to change his decision from out to not out.

This left the Sri Lankan players shocked. They talked and protested with the two on-field umpires, who could only ask them to get along with the game as the decision had been made by the third umpire. The Sri Lankans waited for a while in their huddle, but eventually had to carry on with the game.

Sarkar made 12 more runs after being given a reprieve by the third umpire. Bangladesh won the match in the end by 8 wickets, chasing the target of 166 down in 18.1 overs with Najmul Hossain Shanto scoring 53 runs.
