Even though Glenn Phillips has made it a habit of pulling off such incredible catches and showing acrobatic fielding displays, it feels surreal every time he does it. In the second Test against Australia at the Hagley Oval, in Christchurch, Glenn Phillips plucked a one-handed stunner of Marnus Labuschagne while being airborne like Superman.
Marnus Labuschagne had been batting on 90 in Australia’s first innings and had looked solid with his 12 fours, and was looking to slowly increase Australia’s lead. It took a jaw-dropping one-handed blinder of a catch from Glenn Phillips to end Labuschagne’s innings and bring the Kiwis back in the game.
Labuschagne cut a length delivery outside off from the New Zealand captain Tim Southee. He had placed it well to the left of Phillips at point. But the fielder showcased the best of his fielding skillset by putting in a huge dive and grabbing the ball by his left hand, stretching every sinew of his body.
Even as he went down on the ground, Glenn Phillips didn’t let go off the ball. And only once he had completed the catch and stood up, he threw the ball up in celebration before being mobbed by his teammates. The commentators and the crowd went wild over such an insane catch.
