No cricketer could match the wits of MS Dhoni. Just like his power-hitting, the CSK and India legend has elite timing when it comes to delivering funny one-liners.
Recently, during an event organised for the CSK players and fans, MS Dhoni, who stepped down as CSK’s captain ahead of IPL 2024, made a cheeky comment about the “new captain” that is Ruturaj Gaikwad.
CSK have started IPL 2024 under Gaikwad with two wins in two games, against RCB and Gujarat Titans. Rachin Ravindra, who has opened in place of the injured Devon Conway, has done superbly with the bat in both games, however, the youngster fluffed a chance in the field by dropping Sai Sudharsan, though the dropped catch didn’t cost much and CSK won by 63 runs.
In the event for the CSK players, Dhoni, Rachin, Shivam Dube, and Ravindra Jadeja attended the event. In it, the anchor asked Rachin if he looked at Dhoni after dropping the catch.
MS Dhoni promptly made a witty one-liner, saying “There’s a new captain huh.”
This funny comment from the 42-year-old sent everyone into a laughter ride. As the laughter subdued, Dhoni went on to explain that Rachin is a youngster and playing his first few IPL games. He also talked about Gaikwad’s calm demenor like Dhoni himself has.
MS Dhoni said, “It’s there but I’m not somebody who reacts a lot, especially at somebody who is playing their first or second game. So yeah. And I think Rutu (Ruturaj Gaikwad) is quite the same. But it was fun to watch him (Rachin) move all around like 360 (degrees) he was everywhere, felt like he was dancing.”

Dhoni handed over the CSK captaincy to Gaikwad before the start of IPL 2024. But, Gaikwad revealed recently, MS Dhoni had hinted at it about a year ago.
“Last year itself, Mahi bhai had hinted about captaincy at some point of time,” Gaikwad told IPLT20.com. “He just hinted that, ‘be ready, it shouldn’t be a surprise to you’. When we came into the camp, he involved me in some of the match simulation.”
CSK’s next game is in Vizag against Rishabh Pant’s Delhi Capitals.
